October Update: Competition and Calendar Review

9 Oct

We're pleased to provide an update on the ongoing competition and calendar review that Water Polo New Zealand has been undertaking. The process is progressing well, with strong engagement from our working group as we move through the initial discovery phase.

Progress to date

The working group has been actively exploring a wide range of topics — from identifying dedicated competition windows for schools and clubs through to considering the introduction of new events. The discussions have been thoughtful, robust, and collaborative, reflecting the interest and commitment across our community.

We know that our competition calendar is a finely balanced ecosystem. Adjusting event timings or formats inevitably has a ripple effect, and this interrelated nature makes the review both challenging and important. The group is taking care to consider how any potential changes could impact athletes, clubs, schools, and the broader water polo calendar nationally across New Zealand.

Timing of change

One of the key topics discussed has been when any changes might realistically be implemented. The consensus from the working group is that 2026 will be too early for any significant shifts to the competition structure or calendar. This means there’s no need to rush into consultation before we have worked through the details carefully and thoroughly.

Community consultation

While community consultation remains a critical part of this process, we have decided to push the consultation timeline out. This adjustment gives us the opportunity to build a comprehensive and well-informed consultation document that clearly outlines all potential change options, their implications, and the rationale behind them.

We believe that when we do come to the community for feedback, you should have all the information needed to provide meaningful input. Taking the time to get this right ensures that together, we can make the best decisions for the future of the sport.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far — your expertise and enthusiasm are invaluable. We’ll continue to keep you informed as the review progresses and will share more specific timelines for community consultation once they’re confirmed.

The 2026 competition calendar  - which is as per the 3 year calendar 25/26/27 already presented, will be circulated for Club feedback shortly - this will show minimal changes and after Club consultation, will be published by 1 November 2025.
