Why We Exist

Our sport exists because of all the people who participate, support, volunteer, coach, and manage at each level – from a schoolteacher advocating for Flippa Ball participation to elite athletes touring Europe.

New Zealand Water Polo (NZWP) became an independent National Sporting Organisation (NSO) in 1951, after being managed by the NZ Amateur Swimming Association for many years prior.

Like other NSOs, the driving force behind NZWP’s formation was the need to enable and organise regional, national, and international opportunities for the water polo community.

We also have an obligation to lead the growth, integrity, and sustainability of all aspects of water polo, alongside a responsibility to nurture and strengthen relationships with the community including players, supporters, volunteers, coaches, and administrators.

As a not-for-profit governing body we undertake many tasks across three key focus areas to help keep the sport running efficiently and effectively.
