Kiwis impress at NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships

13 May

New Zealand was well represented at the 2025 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship in Indianapolis this past weekend, with several Kiwi athletes making an impact on the biggest stage in US collegiate water polo.

The championship brought together some of the top collegiate teams in the country to battle for the prestigious national title. Amongst the teams competing, there were a number of Kiwi players on the roster: Bernadette Doyle, Gabrielle Doyle, and Aggie Weston of the University of Hawai'i, as well as Holly Dunn from the University of California, Berkeley.

In a thrilling opening-round match, Hawai'i edged out California 8-7, eliminating Cal from the tournament. Notably, Bernadette Doyle delivered a strong showing, taking two goals from five shots and earning two steals.

Following their win, Hawai'i advanced to face powerhouse Stanford in the next round. Despite a valiant effort, Hawai'i was defeated 13-4, ending their championship run. Bernadette Doyle once again impressed, earning two steals, one goal, and nicely setting up an assist to younger sister Gabrielle Doyle who scored a goal in the first quarter. Stanford went on to claim the NCAA Championship title.

Despite the early exit, Bernadette Doyle's performances did not go unnoticed. She was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament First Team, a prestigious recognition that highlights her elite skill in the pool. Doyle wraps up her collegiate water polo career with a stunning 132 goals, 104 assists, and 132 steals.

Representing their schools, and Aotearoa, with pride, congratulations to our New Zealand players who have made their mark at the highest level of U.S. collegiate water polo. What an achievement!
